The Trouble with Republicans

Take a minute and read just the first page of Meghan McCain's (Jon's daughter) latest column.

Now, frankly, I don't care what it means to be a "pure Republican".  I classify myself as liberal (in the American sense) and progressive.

What I do want to address is the idea that comes up in question two.  For those who didn't click the link...

2. Market-based health-care reform and opposition to Obama-style government-run health care.
Yes. I am against universal health care. Especially until we figure out how are we going to pay for it.
This has been a huge, giant misconception in the health care issue.   Government will NOT be running health care.  WILL NOT.  Doctors will not be employees of the federal government.  There is no public option.  THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT BE RUNNING HEALTH CARE.  The super idealist in me wants something like that, but I know that so long as Glenn Beck has a TV Show, it's unlikely.

Her answer, though, is incredibly perplexing and also the quintessence of the Republican position on health care.  It is one thing to be against government-run health care.  In fact, although it's despite my wishes, I understand that fact quite well.  But being against "universal health care" is not being against government -run health care, it's being against EVERYONE getting health care.

Take a second and think about that.  In her mind, not everyone should get health care.  Not just insurance, but care.

I would love to hear her alternative for health care, or perhaps she thinks the status-quo works.  There are plenty of un and under insured people, and there are plenty who have gone bankrupt thanks to health care costs.

Time will tell.
