I like to eat. And my tastes have matured as I have aged. So, of course, food is near the top of my mind on my trip (not to mention its necessity to life). Here's a quick rundown of the good eats thus far.
Rome, of course, is a terrific city for food. We had pizza three times. The first was at a little cafe that was not a "pizzeria" but a cafe place that served pizza. It was a bit more touristy than I would've liked overall, but the pizza was good. The mozzarella cheese is incredible. That evening, we bought some bread, meat and cheese at a grocery store and sat on some steps and had a little dinner. Also some jam and bananas for breakfast the next morning. A couple decent meals. Ooooo and how could I forget this desert! We stopped for Gelato at a little place on our way back to the hostel and had "After Eight" which was like mint chocolate chip, but if God made it. Instead of chips in the mint ice cream, there was chocolate sauce, which they had also drizzled on top, which had hardened and was, hands down, the best thing I've had on this entire trip. I ate all of mine and some of Breanna's when she got full.
The best, though, was for lunch the next day. We stopped at a pizzeria Breanna wisely chose because many locals were there. I had pizza with pastrami, and she had sun-dried tomatoes, and both had cheese. This pizza was out of this world! Maybe a close second to Pizza House, tough call. That evening, we had dinner at "Mama Angela's" and I had lasagna and Breanna had some other pasta/vegetable dish. It was a bit pricey, and we had the house wine here as well. The lasagna was very good, with the thing clearly setting it apart from others being the hand-made pasta. Peg, I love your lasagna, but it's definitely missing this element. And, no, I don't expect it. Also, the wine tasted like water, but was definitely still 11% per volume. Considering the small portion, and that I was buzzed after dinner, we went to the pizza place again to fill me up the rest of the way.
The next day we travelled to Athens. Right when we arrived in town we had some deep fried dough covered in sugar, and a so-so meal for dinner at a VERY touristy place. Athens, though, is SUCH a neat city. Modern elements, with some old-style stuff---pics soon I swear. My words do not do it justice.
Food in Egypt has been mainly American so far, just because I end up SO hungry and want something I know I'll like. Turkey sandwiches, french fries. In time I"ll discover the good, local places. The juice, though, cannot be duplicated. Mango and Guava.
Until later, my friends.
