So, I'm beginning to find this a more useful exercise than I had anticipated. If you were a fan of The Daily Stick (which actually did have some fans) you know that my previous blogging is more entertaining than what I'm writing now, but I've received some much-needed advice, encouragement and chuckles in response to this, so I figure I owe more frequent updates than what I've been providing.
I have been very impressed with my instructor for the course we're in. He knows his stuff, is interested in helping us improve as teachers, and is about as positive as Steve Keller. I feel fortunate, because Breanna's instructor has not necessarily been as helpful. In a week and a half, though, we switch.
Also, the people in the class have provided an interesting perspective on the course and TEFL in general, especially the job market. Time and time again I have read that without a white face and an American/UK/Canadian passport you're hard-pressed to find a job. Now, obviously that is different for an Egyptian in Egypt, but the Russian girl in our course, who speaks with a noticeable accent, will not be as employable as I am. Or the Swedish guy (who sounds American). Both are terrific teachers, but if they plan on using this to see the world, it will be much different, or, at least, more difficult to find the jobs they want. There certainly is something to be said for American imperialism.
Found some new food this week--koshery. It's noodles, macaroni, lentils, friend onion, and I believe ground beef all mixed together (and some flavors). So filling, so good, so healthy. And it's 7 pounds for a HUGE container (enough to feed me). That's $1.50. Thank goodness, because I still can't access my money. If anyone feels inspired, find the address of US Bank corporate headquarters, and I'll write a letter and ask you to mail it on my behalf. Their 5-Star service is at about 1. But I digress......
Lastly, I had an interesting conversation with my friend Bryan today. He asked about cars, and I mentioned that there are virtually no American cars here now, but about 30-40 years ago there were. As Egypt modernized, it did so following an American style. There was a minute upper class, and a small middle class, and many were poor. However, as the country grew, the middle class has expanded, but hasn't necessarily expanded in an American way. Egypt realized its opportunity as a global player, decided to capitalize on its touristic appeal, and has truly become a global place--or, at least Cairo has. And, to an extent, almost rejected American styles. It's clear to see American things from the 60s or 70s--i.e. cars--but more European and Asian from the 80s and 90s. Although, some places an American company is just too dominate to ignore--like the Dell computers or HP printers, or the Radio Shacks I've seen (at least 3).
Anyways, it's past my bedtime, so I will catch you all on the flip side.
Adios!
Nate
